One Hood Basketball League: Uniting The Youth Through Sports
It's hard to explain what it's like for a child to grow up in a gun-violence infected environment. Every walk to the store becomes a roll of the dice. Many kids today know what it's like to lose a friend before they even know what it's like to have a real job. Luckily for these kids, there are some other alternatives.
The One Hood Basketball League was founded ten years ago by David Kay and Jose Rodriguez. Through this, they have been able to unite hundreds of inner city youth over the last decade. Mr. FlakoVeli, as a brand, will always stand behind community building and helping push forward positive local movements/events.
A good friend of mine, Angel Lopez, a South end native, is the face behind the movement this summer. It's actually pretty cool how they go about it. They have 60 kids sign-up, plus coaches and referees. Then they have a draft to make teams. All-star game. Championship game with rings and all. Im telling you- it's official! I was impressed. I went by for the opening game to take a few pictures.
