What's The Story Behind FLAKOVELI's Latest Project?

Our team sat down with FLAKO to find out more about what exactly inspired his latest music video “Ion Needa”

Team: Let us start with a question I think many want you to answer first. What made you get back into making music after so many years?

Flako: “I never stopped making music. I just wasn’t sharing it with the public. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t write a poem or a rhyme. It’s in my nature. But I was having an ‘identity crisis’ a few years back and needed to focus on finding myself, creatively. That was the best decision I made in my artistic life. This allowed me to really explore and master my craft. I learned what I liked and what I dislike. Now I am fully aware of who I am, what I want to do and most importantly, why I want to do it. Music is just the first of many things I have planned for my culture. Keep an eye on me!” (laughs)

Team: How would you best describe your current style of music?

Flako: “That’s a good question but I might not have a good answer. I would say it’s a mixture of 90’s Hip Hop beats with Spanish lyrics. I grew up listening to artist like Big Pun, Chino XL, DMX and Jay-Z. Of course 2 Pac and other legends as well. So once I heard Latino artist like Tempo, I was easily influenced by that style music. I’m all about lyrics. It’s all about what you’re saying if you ask me.”

Team: What inspired you to write “Ion Needa”? Is it dedicated to anyone specific?

Flako: (smiles and shakes his head) “You’re trying to get me in trouble, huh?” (laughs with his friend) “I’ll tell you this much… all of my art is inspired by something or someone in my life. Whether it’s something I have lived myself or a story someone told me or something someone close to me experienced. I feel I create my best pieces when I’m emotionally invested. This project in particular was about finding the strength to remove yourself out of a toxic relationship. Sometimes we find comfort in the darkness and must find our way back to the light. Ya’ feel me?”

Team: What do you have planned for the music this year? Anything we should be looking out for specifically?

Flako: “In terms of music specifically… look out for a lot of good songs and good videos. I’ve been working really hard with a lot of talent from Boston. I have music produced by my guys Leo, Kam and Midi. All three are amazing producers. I have visuals done by Dante Luna, Gil Videos, Miway and a few others. I’m working on some special projects in collaboration with Capital P Enterprise. Just remember this- I’m going to finish this year strong and start the next [year] even stronger. It’s Veli Season!”

Team: If you could give anyone out there any piece of advice, what would it be?

Flako: “Easy! Find what you love to do and do it every day. Our time on Earth is too short to spend it doing something that doesn’t make you happy. Too many of us live life without ever feeling alive. My life changed drastically the day I made a conscious decision to be my true self. To be whom I wish to be. To do as I please to do. With good intentions of course. But yeah- be unapoligetically yourself in the eyes of society. Be free. Be great.”
